The 2018 AWS re:Invent conference is coming up in just a few days. This is one of the biggest tech conferences of the year, promising to deliver more in-depth, hands-on technical sessions than of years past. If you’ve never been, you’re in luck: this year’s event will offer repeat performances of their most popular sessions, so you can catch up on what you’ve missed.

Like we said, this is one of, if not the biggest tech conferences around. There will be over a thousand sessions, chalk talks, workshops, builder sessions, and hackathons over the course of just a few days, so planning your approach ahead of time is a good idea to avoid missing out on the content that’s most valuable to your re:Invent experience.

Unsure of where to start? We’ve pulled some items directly from re:Invent Guide: The Enterprise Cloud Experience to help you decide what to check out:

ProTips for Scaling AWS Training to Accelerate Adoption

Digital transformation requires experienced engineers to drive execution which are rare to find and hard to train if you don’t have the right strategy. In this talk the AWS Community Hero, Drew Firment, will share his experience about implementing a cloud educational framework at Capital One which accelerated cloud adoption across the organisation.

Blockchain Architecture Design Patterns

When it comes to blockchain or any other technology, business use cases always come first. However, once the need for a distributed ledger-based platform is clear, how do you design a decentralized platform that adheres to the required trust and throughput requirements? In this chalk talk, we whiteboard blockchain architectures, best practices, and antipatterns for top blockchain protocols like Ethereum, Hyperledger, and Corda.

Governance at Scale

As AWS customers accelerate their AWS adoption, and go from a few AWS accounts to support pilot applications to an enterprise migration strategy, they may encounter common challenges that slow down migrations. As your organization moves beyond a handful of accounts and applications, you might get questions like: How do I control budgets across many accounts, workloads, and users in a large organization? How do I automate account provisioning and maintain good security when hundreds of users and BUs are requesting cloud resources? How can I automate compliance to ensure the organization is adhering to enterprise security requirements? The governance at scale solution provides customers an enterprise governance “blueprint” that enable organizations to move faster, and with increased confidence, to AWS.

Iterating Towards a Cloud-Enabled IT Organization

Transforming your organization and its people to become cloud-natives can be an overwhelming task. Platform teams, operations teams, development teams, and their even their leaders have non-technical challenges to consider and overcome to unlock the maximum value of running their businesses on AWS. In this chalk talk you’ll learn how to combine Amazonian ways of working, organizing, and enabling to kickstart your cloud journey with a “Cloud Foundation Team” and a small number of “Two-Pizza Application Teams”, and also how to then iteratively scale the concepts used to build these initial teams into a fully cloud-enabled IT organization.

Executing a Large-Scale Migration to AWS

We have partnered with hundreds of customers in their large-scale migration to the AWS Cloud. In this session, we discuss some of the common challenges that our customers have faced during these migrations and how they overcame them. We also describe the patterns that make migrations successful and the mechanisms we created to help our customers migrate faster.

Technology Trends: Data Lakes and Analytics

In this talk, Anurag Gupta, VP for AWS Analytic and Transactional Database Services, talks about some of the key trends we see in data lakes and analytics, and he describes how they shape the services we offer at AWS. Specific trends include the rise of machine-generated data and semi-structured/unstructured data as dominant sources of new data, the move towards serverless, SPI-centric computing, and the growing need for local access to data from users around the world.

Hybrid Identity Management and Security for Large Enterprises

In IT environments, identity is the key to governance and security. In this session, we discuss the challenges with identity in hybrid environments and some of the solutions. Topics include identity lifecycle management, single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, and dealing with multiple identity providers from different parties. We also cover the security requirements of a hybrid cloud environment: maintaining visibility, encryption, secure remote access, and compliance and auditing requirements.

Transforming Consumer Banking with a 100% Cloud-Based Bank

Customer demands for higher levels of service and value, constantly evolving technology capabilities, and stringent regulatory requirements are all powerful forces reshaping retail banking. Built exclusively on AWS, Starling Bank’s 100% cloud-based, mobile-only banking solution satisfies regulators in terms of its resilience, security, and reliability. It also satisfies consumers by giving them greater control over their data, streamlining the account opening process, accelerating payments, and providing access to innovative new services developed from scratch with open APIs, a developer platform, integration with Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Fitbit Pay and a custom backend ledger and payments integrations. Starling Bank is leading the open banking revolution. In this session, learn how Starling Bank delivers value to their customers and innovates at a very fast pace in a sector that can be slow to evolve.

In addition to sessions, you’ll be able to join Hackathons and Jam sessions to build and create with your peers. Each of these events will provide an opportunity to develop solutions for unique situations in a gamified environment.

Be sure to check out the exhibitor hall and stop by our booth (3013). We hope to see you there!
