for SOA / BPM

Really deliver on the promise of SOA / BPM by adding a virtualization layer between your data and your services or processes

What and How ?

Reconciling, documenting, consolidating and governing your information assets in a way that both business and IT understand them is very valuable on its own. Couple this with the ability to leverage these assets beyond powerpoint slides to operationally deliver real-time information to business services or processes makes the whole incredably valuable.

Problems

Exposing information directly in their existing format to processes and services, incomprehensible for business and inflexible to evolve, has several problems:

  1. No understanding: A business process "create new customer" does not create much added understanding if business people do not exactly understand what a customer means in a particular context.
  2. No business-IT alignment: Business still has no clue what information assets are flowing through their organization's processes.
  3. No optimizations: Garbage in = garbage out.
  4. No agility: Drawing a new business process is easy, but what about the underlying data? The promise to be able to "just re-orchestrate to adopt to new requirements" can not be fulfilled since the underlying data can't adapt with the process side.

Benefits

  1. Understanding: A business process "create new customer" is clear now as everyone knows what exactly a customer means in this context.
  2. Semantic alignment: Business now has a good insight in the information assets flowing through the organization. These information assets are also consolidated from different data silos and stored in a format that business as well as IT understands.
  3. Information governance: Because the information is better modelled and governed, it becomes easier to provide high quality output.
  4. Greater agility: Through introducing a new layer of abstraction, the existing information silos are leveraged and the information contained in them becomes very easy to be delivered to different applications and remains flexible to evolve with changing business requirements.
