Process Driven Data Governance

Collibra's Data Governance Center supports the process of data management through a web-based, collaborative Data Governance platform. The software empowers the data stewardship organization through a business friendly end user environment. Load up your operating model and start Data Governance

Data Governance organizations vary according to company culture and maturity. Your operating model could include a council or steering committee; data governance working groups could be organized by business unit or focused around certain strategic initiatives. An essential step is to assign the appropriate organizational responsibility and corresponding ownership over data domains.

The success of Data Governance relies on clearly defined roles and responsibilities and the ability to monitor ownership and execution. Don't worry if you cannot obtain full responsibilities coverage from the start. It is normal to have varying degrees of maturity (e.g., maybe you managed to identify data stewards in Sales, but not yet in Finance).

Once you identified stakeholders it is essential to keep them properly coordinated: follow up, triage, getting reviews, collecting approvals, chasing votes & decisions, sending out notifications, targeted and complete communication, escalating, reassignments, ... are all part of data stewardship. To tackle this structurally you need to normalize and formalize the workflows between stakeholders (e.g., for issue management, data sharing agreements, generic requests...). Set up processes and roles to match your requirements, so as to optimally engage the various stewards and stakeholders across departments and lines of business.

Report on metrics, maturity and ROI

As soon as you start your first Data Governance activities within the Collibra Data Governance Center, you can start collecting metrics, which cover data- as well as steward and stakeholder activity metrics. Examples include growth metrics that show progress (e.g., declining trend in the number of issues month by month) or maturity metrics that indicate your current level (e.g., 50% responsibility coverage for your assets or 75%). Thus providing key metrics to the organization, as well to upper management regarding the value and ROI of the data Governance program.

Increase and sustain end user adoption

One of the single biggest challenges in Data Governance is sustained adoption. The Collibra Data Governance center drives end user adoption through easy business friendly end user interfaces, extensive data publication and consumption possibilities and integration with productivity tools and mobile devices (email approvals, iPad app, portal integration, Search Everywhere,… ). Accessible data assets become true Enterprise data assets.

For many people in the organization the value comes from consuming information. Their main question will be: how do I get my hands on these assets? As a Data Governance person that means that your top of mind question should be: how do I enable accessibility for our data assets? Instead of trying to bring people to Data Governance, try bringing Data Governance to them.

For starters, people (data producers and data consumers) live in productivity tools (Office, Outlook, ...) as well as specialized reporting environments and corporate portals. This is where they produce and consume data, and this is where trust in the data will gradually disappear if they start asking questions (e.g., "Wait a minute, that data does not seem right..."). So this is the point where you have to provide access to Data Governance (e.g., search everywhere, embedding in a portal, easy issue reporting, ...).

Secondly, mobile devices are more frequently used in corporate environments. Why not enable Data Governance on the go? Getting an approval from a mobile device is more efficient than getting it via hard to schedule, time consuming face to face meetings.
